Can someone help me with Linksys WRT120N?

I just installed this (bought refurbished). It connects fine then it loses connection.

I am using a Dell notebook with Windows 7.

set the router to a different channel... your existing channel could be congested, causing the loss of connection

I have owned 7 different Linksys routers/products and they all disconnect and the longest any linksys router stayed connected without dropping was 3 days.

D-link extreme Nwas better and stayed connected for 1 month.

I tried a netgear .....umm I think it was the Wireless N 600? and it stayed connected for
over 3 months with no drop and was great with gaming over wifi.

The netgear died 2 weeks ago and replaced it with the new apple AC router and its the best!

Ok back to this topic. Sorry to tell you but if you browse the web and watch netflix then it will keep dropping like crazy.
At work I have a stack of 12 various linksys routers and I am prepping them up with either DD WRT or tomato. At least you tried dto save some money so you are not totally burned. I tried to pimp my linksys out to stop the drops and even getting a new antenna which cost me $76 was worthless. I feel cheated by linksys.

I just wonder if their new cool looking AC router has all the bugs worked out.

How do I set to a different channel?

You do it in the router setup. Enter the setup, then go to the Wireless tab. Under Basic Wireless Settings, change the configuration view to Manual from Wi-Fi Protected Setup. This will allow you to change the channel settings.

BTW, Linksys has an emulator for the WRT120N firmware available here if you want to explore the available firmware options without changing anything on your router:

http://ui.linksys.com/files/WRT120N/1.0.01/

You might also check the Linksys website and make sure there isn't a firmware update available for the router that might help with the problem. If you update the firmware, make sure to set the router to defaults before and again after the update before configuring the setup again.

You'll probably regret buying this router -- I bought one once on a lark for $10 at a clearance at Walmart, found out why it was $10 (dropped connections) and ended up returning it for a refund.

When buying routers, you are always better off paying a few more dollars for one that will run an alternative firmware like dd-WRT or Tomato as those firmwares will tend to be more stable than the factory firmwares.

Return it, buy new. This is a classic sign of a router dying. If it's doing it now, even if you find a workaround, who knows how long it will be until it happens again.

Look at it this way: hundreds(thousands maybe) of people are buying routers every day, plugging them in, and the routers work with factory settings and no issues. Yours has factory settings and dropping your connection on day one.

Why would you settle for that?

And FYI: I have an inexpensive little Netgear wireless N router (less than $50) and I can't remember the last time I had to reset it (probably a year or more).

I bought about eight years ago a Linsys WRT54GL and still use it. NEVER had a dropped connection.

OP, the router may be biting the dust or you need to use channels 1, 6 or 11. If you don't need a full thrills Gigabit router check out the WRT54GL. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-190-_-Product

You are using a WPA2 AES encrypted connection? Password of at least 12 digits comprising of letters, numbers and symbols is what you should use.

You may want to see if there is a firmware update. Apply the update with a LAN (Ethernet) connection only.

I did a firmware update today. Hooked the router up, set the password and all. Like I said, it worked the first time then it won't work again now. I need to see if I can change the channel.

Thanks,
Jeff

No need to purchase a pre-historic router just to avoid dropped connections.

A refurb WNR2000v2 would do just as well, and it can handle a 90Mbit ISP connection, and N300 wireless.

Edit: And it's $12.99 on sale, and not $47.99.

Your e-mail is showing in that link, btw. Expect spam-bots to harvest it. I removed it from my quoted link.

Anyways, the Buffalo router has a Mediatek chipset, and the factory firmware is absolutely horrid, dumbed-down, crap. Netgear or Trendnet have much better factory firmware.

There's no way I can see to select a static IP Wan configuration, for example.

Thankfully, there is a beta DD-wrt for that router. I put it on a night ago. So far so good, I guess. Don't buy it unless you plan to go straight to DD-WRT, it's useless without it.

Code:
