Can someone help me with an electrical question?

Someone had spliced the two sides of a power cord to a TV monitor at some time. The splice had come loose and I took the electrical tape off and redid the splice on one side, but while the tape was still off the cord, the two sides with the exposed wires touched and of course there was a big blue flash and smoke.

My question is, did this damage the monitor or do I just need a new cord?

It is likely that the monitor is ok. The short happened external to it. Just fix it and dont set the house on fire;)

It could have damaged the monitor, but usually that flash was the power flowing across the short, and not from the monitor, so you should be ok. But anything can happen with an uncontrolled short.

Smoke from where the spot where the wires touched? Most likely no damage was done but it is possible that a fuse or circuit breaker was tripped inside.

Thanks for the quick responses.

The blue flash and the smoke happened at the exposed wires. I tried the cord again after I'd re-wrapped it, but the monitor wouldn't turn on.

I figured it had at least blown a fuse in the monitor, but I don't know that much about these things.

Actually, I knew enough to unplug it when I redid the splice, but I plugged it back in just to make sure that it was working and before I could unplug it again to wrap the tape back around it, someone bumped the cart that the monitor was on and the exposed wires touched.

Plug something else into the same outlet and see if THAT thing works. Could be you tripped the outlet breaker or the ground short protector on the breaker. Probably blew the fuse in the monitor, tho.

I am quite relieved to hear that!

I plugged a VCR into the same outlet after this happened to check it and there was no problem.

I guess the only way to be sure about the problem is to borrow a cord off of someone and try it. If it still doesn't work, then I guess that leaves a blown fuse in the monitor.

Thanks to everyone for trying to help.

When the power supply cap discharged through the short, it popped the fuse.

Usually if you replace the fuse, everything else survived. Odds are about 1 in 10 it is toast.

Be careful if you decide to tear the monitor apart - I hear they're pretty dangerous to be messing with internally. Standing in a bathtub while attempting the repair would be a bad idea.
