I have this problem, every time I start up or restart the computer, my winxp would ask me to install the driver for the printer, however, I have installed the driver already and its the same printer the whole entire time I have never plug-in another printer to my computer.

So, when I go ahead and let it do the installation of the printer driver, at the end it tells me it was not successful because of unknown port... I checked with the setting its fine, and I can print everything fine. Nothing wrong, but that found a new printer screen just keep poping up everytime I restart a computer.

Anyone can please help me or direct me how to solve this problem please.

One extra thing to add, I think all the problem started when I was trying to set my printer to share on my broadband router sharing device, but then later I make it not share with anything anymore. Maybe somewhere else I activated that I dunno and needs to be turned off.

Yes I have done that and it told me that the software doesnt match, I got the driver from HP web site. In addition, I have also just let it use its own winxp driver but then it tells me unspecific port was unknown...

guess my computer will forever plaqued with that problem....

Lets hope not. First off, need more info. Like what kind of printer and what kind of port (USB, LPT (std, ECP,EPP or ECP and EPP)). Some USB printers need to be unplugged from the system before installing the driver software (and turn off any virus scanners). If running a VIA chipset have you installed the USB filter? (Not 100% sure XP needs it but you should check).

If its a LPT port then I would suggest changing the type in bios to std (normal) and see what it does.

Otherwise there is always the option of reloading. If you take that drastic step and it still happens and you know you loaded the driver correctly. I would have to start thinking printer is unhappy.

Hi, thank you for the reply. This is my printer HP deskjet 842c and I just use the traditional parallel port no USB and definitely never install no usb filter.
I checked my bios and it says the ecp and epp and I have changed it to normal but the problem still here.
I use WinXp with the latest Via 4-in-1 driver.
I even downloaded the latest april application compatible updates from MS Windows Update still didnt solve the problem.

What else can i do?
