im at school at William Paterson Un. in NJ and this connection in my dorm sucks terribly. i was wondering if anyone here know any kind of tricks, tweaks, or hacks to possibly prioitze my PCs connection on the network or just simply speed things up, its pretty pathetic. If you have ANY real suggestions please let me know.

If it makes you feel better tell everybody to stop using streaming video/audio and downloading mp3s/movies. That should make thing much better.

A T1 can handle about 500 people browsing and provide adequate service.

No.

You have to speak to your admin. You are most likely NOT causing the slowdown ,adn there fore can do nothign about it.

..besides getting your own internet service via DSL/Cable

Get Cable or DSL. Order the school a nice fat T3. Destroy every other machine on the network.

You could try browsing when everyone else asleep and hope not many people are downloading all night :) or just ask them to get a connection like my uni, dual gigabit over fibre :) dam fast, too bad they charge us for internet usage at uni :(
Have you actually done a speed test? lots can be found using google and are pretty accurate, would be interesting to know what speed your actually getting.

Or any of the other options posted here should work, or if you can get admin access to the switches (i really do doubt) just change the settings so only you get internet :) lol
