Can someone help me pick a laptop...

since its a secondary computer, it need not be very powerful...this way I'm hopeing to keep the cost down. Here's the main things I'm looking for:

12 inch screen (13.3 at the most if I'm getting a much better deal...also widescreen would be nice but not a requirement)
nice sized HD, I guess 60 to 80 gigs
built in wireless b/g
built in dvd/cd-rw

I'll mainly be using this for word processing, internet browsing, playing dvds, and streaming movies and music using orb and not much else.

What kind of price range am I looking at to get something decent? I dont mind buying used or refurb as long as its gonna be reliable.

Thanks guys

you can probably get a decent used one for 500 or less.. all depends, though.
or you can wait for those sub500 dollars deals at bestbuy/CC/OD/etc. for new laptops, and do some small upgrades. 🙂

cool...do you know where I should look for used ones? and which brand and model i should consider?

umm.. personally I like ASUS laptops, but you can look around. There are some in the For sale/trade forum sometimes.. you can do a search or look around..

model and brand.. it's mostly personal choice, but I would recommend not getting an HP/compaq/emachines/gateway. the quality isn't all that good. T
ry looking for Toshiba, ASUS, SONY (but they're overpriced sometimes), IBM, Dell, etc.
when you're buying it, ask questions, request pictures!

I got my T40 here off of FS/T for $650. P-M 1.5ghz, 1GB Ram, DVD/CDRW, 60gb HDD, WARRANTY!!! 😀

Awesome deal, came with a dock as well that I wasn't expecting.

I just got a second hand laptop a toshiba portege 2010, a dam nice laptop, small enoguh to take to uni each day in my bag and smaller than my course books. Its a little on the slow side (only a 866) but i got it for portability and its fantastic. One of the things to watch out for going second hand or refurbished is the battery as it will most likely not be in great condition.
Also i think you will find that you probably dont need a big hard drive on a secondary system, store everythign on your main system and transfer it as you need it.
