well, i know a bit about computer hardware, but not a ton. something is going wrong on my system. i play COD alot, and in the last two days, the game has starting locking up for about 30 seconds here and there. i figure its my video card ogin bad, but want to make sure before i buy something. so i decided to download 3dmark, and give it a try. my scores were terrible as i would expect with an old system, but ridiculously bad. can anyone help interpret them for me? i mean, can you tell from these if its my video card thats bad? i have an amd 1800xp, geforce ti 4200, and tb santa cruz sound card. here are the results:

Did your system lock up at all during 3dmark testing....?

unfortunately these results don't give much insight into what is wrong......
could you provide us with detailed system specs such as MOBO...RAM etc....Standard HSF or custom job...PSU etc

Your FPS results do look quite low.......

Do you have plenty Free HD space.......games could hang due to constant use of swapfile if you have small amounts of RAM and if you have very little space on the HD then it is harder to use a swap file....

What OS are you using?

Try to give a more detailed picture of the problem that you are experiencing....is it specific to certain games?? i.e OpenGL or D3D specific?

I too have an 1800XP and I know that at the time of purchase the standard RAM on a system like this was probably around 128MB....moral of the story is more detailed specs needed!

edit due to typos....b4 spelling and grammar nazis get me

ok, my full system details are below. the test did seem to hang up during 3d mark. the main problem im having is when im playing COD (which is really the only game i play). i can only play for about ten seconds, then it hangs upp on a frame for 30seconds- 2 minutes.start to play again, and after about ten seconds, it hangs up on a frame again. i have been playing the game for about 8 months, but this is the first time anything close to this has happened. i went as far as to set all my video settings to long, but same thing happens.

ok, here are the system details (i put it together myself, and have used it for 2-3 years now w/o prbs)

66mhz fsb? Ouch. You are running that sucker 34% slower then a 100fsb ;). Look into upping the fsb ;).

Ouch!

I think he means 266mhz fsb. However he definately needs some upgrades. He has a big penalty for no DX9 support.

i know its an old system, but my question is why i took a hit in the last 3 days. could a video card start to go bad w/o dying all at once?

Gaming: CPU AMD Athlon(tm) XP/MP/4 1146 MHz

FSB 66 MHz

Look at the mhz carefully, and you'll see the problem. And I was wrong - that's 67% slower, since it should be on a 133 fsb.

you have to forgive me, b/c i dont know a whole lot about comp hardware. i realize 66mhz is way slow, but could this have changed over the last 3 days? i mean i was able to play call of duty multiplayer fine up until 3 days ago, but now it keeps locking on a frame for a couple of minutes, and it does it after only a few seconds of gameplay. and ive changed nothing on my system lately. is the fsb of 66mhz what my board is supposed to running at, or is my board messed up?

Did you check your computer for Viruses/Spyware? Those things can on occasion provide you with such hickups.
Occasionally, I have seen it happen due to undervolting or overclocking - check the voltages on your PSU.

i just read on another forum that 3dmark misreports the fsb as 66mhz on my board

So does that mean that 3dmark doesn't actually measure the CPU speed....it just calculates it from FSB x multiplier

This is just a maybe here, but it seems as though it may be overheating. Check to see if the Vid card fan is running or burned out.
