Can Someone Give You A Ticket For An Improperly Displayed License Plate?

A friend of mine just renewed his plates and had trouble getting his old plate off his car. So he just stuck the new plate in the window until he would have time to work with the old one. He's been driving around like this for 2 days. Today, he got an $80 ticket for improperly displaying his license plate. Anyone ever heard of this? I thought we have license plates so we can pay taxes for the roads. Should it matter as long as the plate is clearly visible in the back window and the taxes have been paid?

It's legal, but the cop must of been in a bad mood. Most would just give a warning for something like that.

I once got a ticket for "improper tag display" when my temporary tag from my new car had fallen off the rear window.

I could have contested it, but sometimes it's just not worth the trouble.

my friend got a ticket for her prelude for not having front license plates. Thing is she even have the holes in her front bumper for the license plate to hang.

It really is how pissy of a mood the police officer is.

same goes for window tinting/clear corner lights/subwoofers/and just about anything that's not stock on a car

If the copper can't see it, then it could not exist. Don't you agree it is ticket-worthy for not having a plate? Well.....think about this one.

the whole license plate thing also depends on the laws for the state you live in

Heh, here they don't care (I live in Alaska). We got a new truck last year that had a full dark tented rear window to which we taped the temp license. You couldn't even see it from the road, yet we never got stopped while having it on the truck for around 1.5months.

Personally I'd fight it!

IOf your friend goes to court I'd bet he can get off without having to pay the ticket. But then he might have to pay court cost which could end up being even move..

Lord Maul - The cop could see it, he said it was not attached horizontally to the rear bumper as stated in my state code. Therefore, he issued a ticket even though my friend explained that the screw on his current plate was rusted to the bumper and he couldn't get it loose and the screw got stripped.

Besides, according to my state statute, there are 6 conditions which must be met for displaying a license plate. My friend met every condition with the exception of one (having it attached horizontally to the rear bumper). So he did the best he could and had it clearly displayed in the back window.

Anyway, he's going to court on this one and I'm sure the judge will have to look at the circumstances.
