Can someone give this a quick review for me?

Hey, All,

I wanna set up a dual boot system with Win2K and XP Home SP3 on one hard drive. This will be my first time setting up a dual boot system.

I read on another Web site that the following is how to go about it:

"Install Win2k first. During the initial part of the installation divide the disk up into two partitions. Install win2k on the first partition.

After it's installed, install XP on the second. By default your system will dual boot and XP will be the default, but the default OS can easily be changed if desired."

Would you guys agree? Anything else I need to know? A couple questions:

1. What size partitions should I create for each OS? Or will Windows automatically just divide the HD in half (so to speak)? (I know absolutely zero about partitioning HDs. 😱 )

2. How will I get a screen to appear at boot-up each time that will enable me to choose which OS to boot to? Or will that just automatically appear?

TIA

Id give 2000 a 40gb partition, I think a normal install takes up 3gb or so.
You will get a menu to choose which one to boot into, I think the default time it waits for you to choose something is 30 seconds, but you can change that to whatever

Better question though....what will you be using 2000 for?
You might be able to use VMWare server to install 2000 onto a virtual hard drive that is inside of a folder on your HDD, and have XP Home installed on the HDD (or vice versa), then you could run both at the same time !

Re your first paragraph above, thanks. That's what I wanted to know.

Re your second paragraph, I'll mainly be using it as a "guinea pig" O.S. to install different kinds of software (security and office apps mainly) and try them out. I get called on by friends and acquaintances to fix their machines for them from time to time, and since a couple have Win2K, it's helpful to have a Win2K installation of my own in case I need it for troubleshooting.

Your idea about VMWare Server is interesting, except I know nothing about it! Rather than dive into something entirely new right now, I think I'll stick to my original idea for now. But the idea sounds intriguing and I might look into it down the road. Thanks for mentioning it. BTW, what do you mean by "virtual hard drive"? How does that work?

virtual hard drive is a file thats used by the virtual machine as a hard drive

another nice thing is "snapshots", you can always revert to a previous snaphot with a vm, good for when your testing things out....ie "guinea pig"

Cool. That sounds interesting, and just the sort of thing my guinea pig machine is intended for. 😛 I'd like to give that a whirl one of these days. Thanks for the tip and info.
