just some very basic general questions. i went to doom9.org, and divx.com but their faqs and basics confuse me. i take it divx is just another encoding decoding scheme for movies. its popular since its compression ratio is very high. most people encode divx movies from capturing it on tv with a capture card, converting vcd's to divx (?), or ripping dvds to harddrive and then encoding as divx so that burn it on regular 700mb cd and play it on regular cd player. did i basically get it right? is there more general stuff i should know about divx encoding??

Basically yes. Think of divx as an MP3. However, converting a vcd to divx is very rare as you would be actually compressing an already compressed format. Going from a divx to vcd/svcd is common as you can then play it in a stand-along dvd player w/ your TV. There are a couple of stand-alone divx players (I think some company in Europe made'em) but most use a computer w/ TV-out to watch divx movies on a big screen TV. Some good encoded divx movies can be very high quality with 5.1 channel sound, very similar to dvd movies.
