Can someone give me the lowdown on a Radeon 9600SE?

Garbage card, 4 pipe lines, slower then non-pro version, slow memory, basicly a broken down 8500 with half the pipe lines.

9600 SE is as fast as a ATI 9000 Pro if not maybe a little slower ..

A Radeon 8500 is faster then a 9600 SE

Purely for DX9 games, yes.
But not worth the cost. If you want an upgrade from a GF3 Ti 200...GF4 Ti 4200, 4800se, GF FX 5700, or 9600 Pro (or better).
I reiterate:

You got to love how ATI put the name 9600 on a card that is very impressive and a card that is slower then a Radeon 8500, 9000 Pro, 9100 Pro, Geforce4mx460 ( GeforceFX5200 128bit. ) Geforce3 Ti500 Geforce3Ti200 Geforce3 ATI
All these cards are cheapies and cost nothing but the outdo the 9600SE that costs more.

These cards are better then the 9600SE .... !! But the 9600 Pro is better then all these cards

ATI did something wrong in the worst possible way and ended up with a 9600SE.

The Geforce FX5200 64bit card is also a shocking product to be avoided

It'll probably be slower than that old gf3 in a lot of cases. Definitely not worth the money.

Not really. If you're really skimping go for a 9600LE, afaik the cheapest current card (its getting hard to find non 64bit 9200s and 5200s) with a 128bit memory bus, but uses cheaper/slower tsop memory chips (generally 5ns). Only slightly more expensive than the Suck Edition.

SE = sucky edition.

avoid any video card with models ending in MX or SE :)

Too bad there is no such thing as a 9600LE.

Google first, then post.

Jetway 9600LE. XpertVision is the other main manufacturer of 9600LEs, but their spotty page doesn't have their entire product line on it.

That's the same thing as a 9600 non pro. It isn't even listed on ati's website, so apparently they thought they'd dream up their own name for the card.

Yes that's right its a card, and afaik the cheapest 128it memory bus card currently commonly available, which was why I recommended it over the 64bit SE if he was skimping on his video card.

For the record though, ATi doesn't have the 9800SE listed on their webpage either.

It's sad when manufacturers intentially try to screw over customers.

*cough* FX5200 *cough*

9600 se is pretty good card. Runs everything fine including call of duty and painkiller and half life 2 which comes with it.
I am actually using one I am going to return it before the 30 days are up so i can upgrade. I only got it because my fx 5700 burnt out.. It runs very good for the specs though. Dont listen to these guys they dont know what theyre talking about. They look at numbers and think they can predict performance. This card runs smooth and all games are playable. thats all that counts.
This is one card that will prove benchmarks useless. Despite low numbers it is more playable than higher benchmarking cards.
