Hi everyone,

Can anyone please recommend a display adaptor (if possible dual head for two monitors) for 3D modeling (Solidworks, Solidedge, Pro engineer)? Budget $200 $250 max, 32MB RAM, Open gl.

I am thingking about these three possibility, if it were you which one will you pick:

- CardExpert Geforce 2 Pro/400 Golden sample http://www.gainward.com/us/products/vgacard.htm
- Oxygen GVX1 http://www.3dlabs.com/product/card/...oxygen_gvx1.htm
- Radeon VE or 7500

Thanks in advance for your time and help.

SYS: Dell Dimension P3 500, 256 MB SDRAM PC 100, 30GB IBM HD 75GXP, 8MB ATI WONDER PRO.

I'd drop the Radeon from consideration, they are not designed for pro 3D applications and while there drivers may be improving they still are not up to the level of the other two.

The GVX1 has the best driver support of the three and likely will provide the best image quality and consistent performance however it will likely be a bit slower then the GF2 Pro in certain aspects.

The GF2 Pro will be very fast in some areas although not so good in others. Because it is a GF based board and not a Quadro the drivers are crippled in certain aspects. I'm not sure if Elsa offers a Quadro2MX with a dual display option but I would consider that over a GF2 Pro. The core speed is what matters for and CAD based application, not the memory bandwith so a Quadro MX will be as fast as a GF2 Pro if they are both clocked the same in worse case scenarios for the MX and the drivers which are properly optimized will perform significantly better in certain aspects.

Also, upgrading your CPU should be something you seriously consider, they don't make a processor that is "fast enough", but the faster the better obviously🙂

I don't know how robust the professional 3D capabilities are, but the Radeon 7500 can handle resolutions as high as 2560x1920, which neither of the other two can approach, and the second "head" can do at least 2048x1536.

If you can stand to wait a few weeks you might want to see how the Radeon 8500 pans out. It will be the first full powered consumer card with dual-VGA output. $300 MSRP.

I have a GF2MX and have to say that the 2nd VGA output sucks. It sucks hard. Not good for high resolution/refresh rates at all. If you do go that route you could always do the Quadro mod on it tho.
