Can someone give me some motivation regarding glossy screens?

I really like the Macbook. The basic white, no-frills Macbook. The problem is, glossy screens are terrible. Even at maximum brightness, the glare is unbearable around fluorescent lights. Outdoor lighting completely kills the experience.

The Macbook Pro is a great machine, but I can't justify the $800 price increase for a matte screen, faster graphics card, and lesser battery life.

Are there any reports of people modding a matte screen into the Macbook? I don't know... it's a bummer 🙁

I really like the glossy screen, but I agree, the lack of choice really hurts. I like the extra contrast it seems to provide, but the glare really is annoying. Where I have my computer, it doesn't matter, but for a laptop, where you might be anywhere, kinda sucks.

Still getting one for my sis, so hopefully it won't be too much of an issue for her. But this is what I hate about apple's low end line... they dumb things down a bit TOO much.

Hmm.. I think I'm one of the few that really likes the glossy screens. In all honesty, my wife has the Macbook and I have an LED Macbook Pro. I can wholly say that I would wait until the LED Macbooks come out before I would buy another one. The difference in the screen quality is huge to me.

Glossy screens improve Contrast (light gets reflected, rather than absorbed) so blacks can be darker and not as washed out as a matte finish. Personally I prefer a glossy screen, but a matte finish is more accurate and can be used in more situations.

I prefer glossy over matte, but kmax is right, if you can wait, wait for LED backlighting, it will change the whole game.

i went from the core duo macbook to the penryn macbook pro, and the difference with led is pretty noticeable. even with the c2d mb which i got my mom pales in comparison in terms of brightness.

i even opted for glossy on the mbp because it just looks darn nice. i feel like matte is a step back nowadays. i never had a problem with glare in the first place, but then again my usage is primarily indoors (library, classroom, my room, etc).

I just got a new MacBook with the glossy, and a MacBook Pro with the matte. Honestly, I like the MacBook glossy screen better! Their glossy is not like the Dell glossy...

Personally (and I'm not trying to belittle the glossy camp because there's room in the world for both) I think the glossy vs. matte argument is really toy vs. tool.

When I pull my laptop out of my bag, I need it to Just Work. That's why it has two batts and no CD/DVD. 14" matte screen, mag frame. I do use it for fun, but it's purpose is Work.

There are plenty of people that just use their laptops for fun. They can fidget around to find a good angle with no glare. And the glossy screens do look better.

It's a Corvette vs. a Titan.

Function over form is an annoying debate. Why can't we have both? I use my laptop to work, but I also want to do it without having it look fugly. Right now I get that with my Macbook Pro. I'm quite happy with it, haven't ever had to finangle the screen to get a good look, and the performance is great.
