XGA, (xtended graphics array) TFT is the way to go....ultra crisp w/ vibrant colors and high resolutions but somewhat expensive.

HPA, (high performance addressing) is dual scan and considered a "cheaper display"

SVGA, (Super Video Graphics Array) is what most monitors sold today are considered. The image resolution and specs will tend to vary.

Beyond XGA is UXGA (1280x1024). I have that on my Gateway Solo 9300 CX. The TFT screen is 15.6 inches . . . same as a typical 17-inch CRT monitor.

It is important to know the native resolution of your TFT display. I have another laptop with XGA (1024x768) on a 14.1 inch display.

Anything other than native resolution is somewhat jaggy because it is being interpolated. LCD displays have a specific number of pixels in native resolution . . . anything other that that is achieved by combining them into bigger pixels. You can't exceed native resolution.

On an older TFT laptop display, it was a 12-inch screen with native resolution of 800x600.

So . . . there is a relationship between the size of the display and the native or optimum resolution.

Just some added thoughts. TFT refers to the display type. VGA, XGA and UXGA refer to the native resolution. The usual alternative to TFT is Dual Scan or some prproetary version thereof.
