Can someone give me cliffs on the Terri Schiavo story ?

deftron

Everywhere I go, people are talking about this ...
I never even heard about it till I was at a clients and they showed
some van on TV driving down the street that had her body
(I thought it was Micael Jackson pulling an OJ at first)

Anyways, what's the whole story

How did she get on life support?
Why was her life support pulled?
Why is the story so popular?
Why did Bush have a news conference about her?

There was some sort of accident, husband spent 2 years doing everything he could to help her. She spent 15 years brain dead on a bed. He had the feeding tube removed.

And she didn't make a living will, so her parents weren't the legal guardian's anymore, nor was she ever specific about her wishes depending on medical condition.

Husband said that she verbally mentioned she didn't want to live like this, but either way, it was his decision to make. Parents tried every legal avenue, but were unsuccessful.

I have not followed the story either but, how could she say she did not want to live like that if she was brain dead?😕

she thought she was fat, went on a diet, became anorexic, chemical imbalance, had a heart attack from low potassium, sued the doctor for it, won some money, now she is brain dead because of the hear attack, no living willing, so dont know what to do with her, her husband wants her off life support, her parents didnt, fight, fight, fight..now she is dead.

No ...

I jsut don't go in P & N ... plus I don't have cable.

Serously, I don't really know anything about it.
I was just looking for a quick brief ... the P&N thread is like 600 posts
and the articles on CNN aren't giving much background..

I don't see why this particular story
is so popular and why the President had a news conference,
I don't think it's the first time a brain dead person had their life
support ended.

This wasn't an accident. She had brain damage due to lack of potassium as a result of her bulimic condition. She has been severely brain damaged for 15 years living in a vegetative state. She has some reactions to people in the room, some reflexes and what not. The docs/courts have decided she is not conscious. IE the body's working but no one's home upstairs. Her level of consciousness has been up for debate. She has been on a feeding tube for since the brain damage.

The husband says she wouldn't want to live that way, the parents disagree. The husband has custody over his wife, and ultimately the courts sided with him. The tube was removed and today she died of starvation/dehydration since euthanasia is not constitutional.

Then after testifying that he wanted to devote the rest of his life to taking care of her, he collected hundreds of thousands from a malpractice case, and then he ordered all therapy stopped as soon as he collected the money. She spent 15 years brain dead on a bed. He had the feeding tube removed.

Inserted an additional bit o' stuff that is important.

she wasn't brain dead...
the parents claimed that she could recover, and got as much media involved as possible.

That is what really gets me. They should of kept the tube in and if her husband won kill her with an injection or something.

Actually, I don't think it is. I had a conversation with my friends, whom are doctors, regarding this very issue, and I also found some info. on the web supporting this. They said that starvation is actually a very *peaceful and painless* way to go. I started drilling them, and questioning them about this. Talking about how when I get hungry, I get all sorts of hunger pains. They said yeah, after these are over, sometimes within a day of onset, that it's peaceful and you don't feel anything. Your body just sorta slips away slowly, first going into a coma. (I don't know what state she was in already, so I don't know how exactly it affected her.)

Then again, I am not a doctor, so I don't know. But this was coming from two educated people in the field.

Because when they pulled her life support she didnt die. They pulled her feeding tube and she lived for 13 days. She also was pointing at her stomach like she was hungry or something like that. Basically the world just watched her starve to death.

I don't really believe much of what either the husband or parents are saying at this point... The parent's claims in court became more wild as the process went on. If they wanted to make the arguements they were making in the last few days, they should have said that in previous cases. Even the FL judge said that on one of their recent appeals/filings.
