Can someone give me advice on running cable for a home network?

I live in a one story ranch house with a basement and I want to run cabling for a home network and also coax for video. Unfortunately I don'nt have much experience in running cables through a house but I want to setup my network and share cable/satellite video.

What kind of cable should I use for the network?

What type of cable would I need for video?

Do I need to install a patch panel?

Thanks for any info on this

For the network you either need CAT5e (suggested, because it supports Gigabit ethernet) or Cat6 if you are REALLY futureproofing.

You'll need a patch panel if you plan on having a lot of drops. How many different drops do you plan on doing?

I'll be doing quite a few, at least one for every room in the house and 2 in the bedrooms, kitchen, liviing room and family room
