I don't get it. I'm 40. My view is that he was a one hit wonder that made a crappy movie in the 80s. I understand that he has a cult following but why is it all over the news right now?

OK, Vanilla Ice was a one hit wonder that had a crappy movie. He better get the same kind of outpour when he dies!

But seriously. I don't get it. 80s pop icon flash in the pan with a long term cult following. Someone needs to tell me what I am missing. Any guitarists actually in here that can vouch for his talent musically?

This is a troll thread. Especially in light of the fact that Price just passed and your comments about him above are disrespectful.

Rock Hall of Fame of his first year of eligibility.

Even myself as a non-fan can appreciate his musical talents that were given to the world.

So this thread is locked.

Surely you know nothing about Prince. He has dozens of records, has made music for many artist and groups, was a musical genius and played pretty much every instrument with ease. In fact, most of his albums he has preduced, played, recorded everything by himself. He only needed a band to play concerts and venues. He has had multiple hits long before purple rain. When I worked at Arista records I met him several times. The man was a genius.

Heres a wiki list:

Prince had several hits and was extremely popular for a few years. Most of his music was not to my taste but I still recognize that he was extremely talented and put a lot of effort and thought into his music.

Since you are forty, you would have been too young for his peak years of popularity (mid 80s).

This thread is so dumb it makes my head hurt. One hit wonder? Good Christ.

Basically this. Plus he pretty much created an entire subgenre of music in the early 80's. The list of bands/artists influenced by him is huge (and those aren't even counting the ones he wrote/produced for).

I don't get the proudly proclaiming my ignorance thread either.

And he's 40?

Sad. Hilarious, but sad.

Not a fan of his music, never understood why he was so famous either, but then again that is true of many performers who I don't personally care for.

Just figured it was a case where his style of music appealed to a lot of people, if not me.

Being a fan and recognizing talent are 2 separate things.

Dude, he was a virtuoso, not only on guitars but keyboards and drums and he played every instrument on his records. One hit? What hit are you talking about, there were a lot of them. His Super Bowl 1/2 time show was about as good as they got.

A thread about disagreeing with society's valuation of someone who has died, posted under the guise of "I don't understand."

Well done, well done.
