Can someone explain Usenet?

Most ISPs offer their own usenet servers, but they generally aren't good for binary groups.

You can pay for usenet access at a ton of places where they offer better service.

I guess the easiest (although not the best) way to describe usenet is AT on steroids with attachements.

my ISP gives me 1 GB of d/l a month for free. Ask your ISP if they offer something similar.....I signed up at easynews for $10/month which gives me 6GB/month d/l.
A good site is slyck. Someone here mentioned it to me and that is how I learned how to use newsgroups.

Easynews is the easiest to use because the have a web based reader. It basically compiles everything for you so no waiting to download headers. I use GIGANews, 10.5GB for $11.00/month. Not too expensive and there retention is great.

illusion88, as to what it is... It's basically a place to post and read posts. At least that was the intent. Now it's a place to find anything under the sun, movies, prOn, games, music, etc.

newsbin pro is by far the best binary download program.

usenet = anything that's illegal you can think of.

All right then, but I have to pay for this right? There is no free? Does anyone know if Pacbell does the usenet thing? Perhaps I should call them.

most isps should provide news service. though the quality usually is no where near as good as a pay 2 use one. check their website.

yeah, give em a call. you will need a username and password + the name of their server.

So is it free? And what does it do?

It's the best kept secret about the internet, that's what it is. (whisper) - a very old and mysterious part of the internet, even older than the web...

We all know what it is here, but 95% of regular internet users don't.

All this business with Kazaa and such - doesn't mean a thing to me, I just go to usenet. With over 80,000 different newsgroups, I can usually find what I'm looking for.

Most ISPs offer usenet access, but their servers have lousy retention, and are mostly censored. You need to go with a usenet provider like Giganews, and use a reader such as XNews (best for binaries), or Agent (best for text) - IMO.

Check this out.

Usenet is basically whatever you can imagine 🙂

Most people want to use it now for the binaries as forum based discussion is usually easier nowadays.

But it was around before the Web yeah....

There are free servers, your ISP probably offers USENET, and pay servers.

Some ISP's do have nice servers, some filter out the 'bad seeds' like warez, porn and sex.....
