Can someone explain to me why Runaway Jury was changed?

I read the book years ago, and it was about the dirty tricks that Tobacco companies pulled. Now in the movie it is about guns? WTF? Why was that changed? It totally usurps the whole major idea behind the book. It disrupts the conspiracy that was in place to make you empathize with the "juror" and then his profit. Why did they do this?

Probably because of the ever-powerful tobacco lobbyists. I wonder if they tried to stop The Insider from getting made...that was a pretty good flick.

Someone asked this about Michael Crichton books and the reason is because they want to give the people who've read the books a bit more. Not pictures to go with the book.

Giving me a bit more is not changing the entire plot.

That is very possible, but why pick guns? Gun are not inherently harmful like cigarettes are. There is nothing beneficial about smoking cigarettes, whereas owning a firearm or carrying a gun can be very beneficial.

I'm serious. Guns are there to hunt animals, protect lives, and help control crime. Yeah people kill people with guns, but it wasn't the gun that did it. Cigarettes were harmful no matter how they were used.
