Add this one to like 10-15 Far Side comics I don't get. Ive pretty much read all the FS books...shame Larson stopped writing them

Hmm, maybe because trying to stay awake/alive and pay attention to a bunch of old women blabber is more painful than a c-clamp to the head?

Other possibilities exist, but, it's probably not so funny unless you've reached old age or spend a lot of time with old folks.

[edit] The other guy in the chair in the foreground is a bit younger, so, maybe he's witnessing the beat down feeling of his dad/realative after years of dealing with the wife and her gang. I'd guess that was Gary and his dad or grandad at some point in time [/edit].

It's a clamp shaped like a C. You can twist one side to "tighten/loosen". You have quite some leverage, so, if it was fastened to your head and someone started turning it would, I assume, hurt like hell just before you pass out and die.

A C-clamp is used to hold wood down while you work on it. You twist it to make it tighter.

Its how the guy's mean wife makes him stay awake at dinner parties - she puts a C-Clamp on his head and tightens it till the pain keeps him awake.

Not the best one by Larson, but kind of funny in a "how can she be so evil?" way.
