that would be facebook's stalker detector. Seems to be working.

New federal pedophile laws require Facebook and other sites to restrict known pedophiles with known 14 year olds.

that's what I keep wondering. can you do that?

party in question is just my HS boyfriend that I got into a huge messy breakup with years ago... I don't really want to friend him, it just seemed curious to me that he wouldn't show up despite all the mutual friends and like everyone else from my high school graduating class on my suggestions list.

I had another oddity as well,

I subleased a place from a guy. met him through CL.

about 10 months later I see him on the suggested friends. i'm thinking WTF

i can only think of 3 reasons

ip address

address to my location (i don't think facebook has this)

or import friends through gmail contacts...which I may have used at one point. still for the dude to show up 10 months later means facebook has something on me which doens't make feel great...

yes, there are privacy settings that allow you to block your name from coming up in searches.

I just read an article about how Facebook has changed their algorithm to pull from the contacts so that these kinds of things are more likely than before. Some women were freaking out about ex-husbands or abusive boyfriends appearing, etc. Once you click the "X", they won't reappear apparently.

There are quite a few oddities with Facebook. It repeatedly suggests people that I've clicked the 'X' for -- that's most annoying, IMO. I also haven't yet figured out where there are 1) privacy settings on my account messed up, or 2) privacy settings on the accounts of quite a few friends that aren't as i expect, or 3) general weirdness happening, because the news/status that I see in my browser is completely different than those I see if I use Facebook on my Windows Mobile device (that is to say, I see a lot of updates on my phone that I don't see in my browser).

One oddity is that all but one my Facebook friends are from Ars Technica. Not one of you lot has befriended me. :frown:

Might be because I use my real name.;)

Edit: or you all hate my guts.

You aren't really friends with any of your Facebook friends. You just added them because you had classes with them, and Facebook knows that. The no-friend detector killed your suggested friends.

If THEY imported their e-mail contacts and that included you, then they may show up as a suggested friend for you. Doesn't matter if you never imported your own e-mails.

Facebook suggests possible friends to you based on certain criteria. One of the criteria is mutual friends. Facebook assumes that if you and another person have a lot of mutual friends, you likely know each other. Having 14 mutual friends with someone and not having them show up as a friend suggestion does seem odd.

facebook suggests friends based on mutual friends. I have people on my "suggested" list that I share only a small handful of mutuals with or that happened to be passing through my high school around the same time as me 10-12 years ago... it seemed weird that someone with whom i share 14 mutual contacts with wouldn't be on the list while someone that I share 2 contacts with it.

well.. do you KNOW the person who you "share" 14 acquaintances with? if so.. why not just fucking add them... if you dont... who cares if facebook doesn't want you to be friends with them.

stop waiting for some sort of "facebook acceptance" in wanting facebook to ask you if you want to be friends with them.

I care because it's weird :p and I thought it was funny that the person in question might care enough to specifically block me, but after reading this thread, I'm going to assume he just has his privacy settings set to the max or whatever.
