I have built a computer with a AMD Atholon Thunderbird 800 MHz in November 2000. I hope to upgrade soon, but I see there are new models out and some coming out in the future. There's the XP, Hammer and a bunch more. What speeds do they run and which one is better than the others? I haven't been keeping up with CPUs for a long time so any news would be appreciated. This post could also be used as a reference point for other forum users looking to see the differences and which ones might be better for different situations such as gaming, video capture, etc. Thanks.

From what I know the Hammer isnt out till sometime in 2003. The XP on the other hand is already out. It is from what I have read a great performer and worth the money. From an 800 T/Bird you can probably be safe to say that you would notice the difference - the AMD XP 1800+ (1.6) is supposed to perfrom as well as if not better than the P4 1.8 for a fraction of the cost. I think you will need to change your motherboard if you want to buy one.

Hi luna

I myself am waiting for Clawhammer which should be out in Q4 this year. It is rumored that it might come out as early as october. If I were you, I would try to hold out for one of these, cause they're looking pretty good imo. I think the first Clawhammer to be released will be labeled 3400+. Well, good luck; I don't have a whole lot of time to post info for you atm.

The motherboard I just bought supports these processors

Processor
Socket A
Supports AMD Athlon XP CPU up to 2000+MhzG
Supports AMD Duron CPU 950Mhz+
Supports AMD Mogan CPU 1.1GHz

I should be good then with the XP.

Of these series mentioned, which one would be the best do you think. I do play games and watch DVDs on my computer.

what would the true speed of this 3400+ chip be...about 2.7 ghz? so basically you're saying that the XP line will be ramped up to about 3000+ between now and this fall?

Thoroughbred is coming inbetween XP(palomino .18u) and hammer(.13u, not socket A).

Thoroughbred will be socket A, .13 micron, and starting at 2200+(1.7xGhz ?) IIRC.
should be out pretty soon too. I assume it will carry the Athlon XP name as well.. but they might change it to differentiate(sp?) from the Palomino core
