it's just the japanese version of cartoons.

And I seriously SERIOUSLY doubt that any other type of cartoons that has a hentai style

(And if there is, then I'm wrong, but it's not as if I go looking for that kind of stuff!)

It's detestable, especially so that young adults (read: ADULTS) watch that tripe.

Hey man, to each their own. I've seen my fair share of anime and I find it's all good.

The one thing which I won't look at (what's the point?) is hentai

anime is like any other genre, lots of crap, some good stuff. all depends on your preferences.

My GF likes to watch "Inuyasha" on Cartoon Netowork. I sit through it and make fun of the characters and plot twists. I think I have sucked the fun out of it for her.

its just any other genre of entertainment. i personally find no value in reality tv or your generic tv series. some like it, some don't. i like some of it (samurai champloo, kenshin, cowboy bebop), and dislike some of it (dragon ball z or initial d).

it's a form of entertainment and as such doesn't really need a redeeming value. it's like asking to find a reason america is fascinated with "reality tv" at the moment. that crap isn't reality. reality is sitting up at 6:20 am cause you can't go to sleep and typing up an explanation on anandtech for people liking anime =P

its funny how most inflamatory and least informative threads happen to be the ones that get reposted x10000 times. hail to the nef!

</flamesuit on>
anime is simply a better form of entertainment, and i am glad to see you openly express your fears of the anime shows encroching the market. sure, there always have been naysayers to anything thats relatively new - like rock music few decades ago. so my advice to you anime haters : give it up, there is nothing you can do about more people discovering the greatness of anime they were ignorant about. i can gurantee you will hear and see more about anime in days to come. its been quite some time since i lost what little interest i had in inferior holleywood/american tv shows, you wont look back once you learn how enjoyable some anime shows are. better yet, there is simply no time left to watch something that *might be* ok when there is a plethora of classics to chose from
</flamesuit off>

for those who arent here just to troll/flame/nef and genuinely curious : think of your obsession of playing video games like coutner-strike. most girls cant understand what pleasure you take in killling quasi-real wannabe looking people with toy guns over and over. how you gonna explain them why you waste your time to play that game? YOU SIMPLY DONT NEED TO. hobbies never have to be justified, you do what you like. anime isnt nearly as harmful as some of other stuff i wouldnt mention here (not in a mood to instigate another meaningless flamefest)

this is already been done to ad naseum and i dont feel a need to repeat myself yet again. do a search, some good points are made in older threads. if you are out to flame and already convinced yourself you dont like anime, there is no way anyone can 'explain' it to you otherwise (duh)

I'm kinda on the fence with anime, some of it can be good but I often find that many anime movies/shows are so friggin goofy that I can't watch all of it. Also I'm not really a fan of the bug eyed characters and the over the top character reactions/expressions/etc..

However stuff like Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D and Cowboy Bebop are good anime shows/movies in my opinion. If I could find more stuff like that I'd probably be an anime freak.

Long free series that are easily downloadable and provide good entertainment. Some are crappy I admit but some are pretty funny and its better to pop one on and watch it than have nothing to do.

it's just the japanese version of cartoons.

IMHO the US has no equivalent. It's very rare when a US cartoon isn't for kids - even stuff like Rodger Rabbit.

I don't like anime that consists of mecha. I love character driven anime - like Haibane Renmei. But that's just me...

I don't understand the fascination, but I don't understand the hatred towards it either.

It's not all tentacle porn, Yu-Gi-Oh/Pokemon style battling, or Dragonball style senseless violence and redundancy. (Seriously, DragonballZ = Power Rangers as far as complexity and redundancy. [I particularly hate DBZ. I've never seen so many people so rabid over such a crappy cartoon before. Every episode I've ever seen was a five minute battle, padded to last the full half hour with mindless and nonsensical dialogue exchanged between good guy(s) and bad guy(s), then ended with one guy summoning a solar system sized energy ball of some sorts in an attempt to kill the other guy but ends up decimating a 500 mile radius piece of the earth instead. Ending with a dramatic "to be continued" that leaves fan boys ejaculating on their television sets.])

Part of my understanding is that you really need to see the original Japanese versions, in Japanese (with subtitles), to really get the full effect. Most of the people I've met who try to get me onto anime try to sell me on this specific point. Almost all anime shown in the states, translated into English, are considerably watered down to a kiddy level, or missing a lot of worthwhile content that's lost in translation. This turns into a separation of classes so to speak. People who buy the ridiculously expensive anime DVD's for original/full content, people who catch a few pieces of hentai porn and the occasional episode of Yu-Gi-Oh/DBZ/Pokemon/Digimon and just don't "get it", and the people who watch Yu-Gi-Oh/DBZ/Pokemon/Digimon and THINK that they know 'good' anime, so they act like rabid fan boys make everyone hate them and by proxy, anime itself.

(All of this is either my opinion, or my understanding. Nobody assume that I'm trying to lay down law here.)

Personally, I like some anime because I really like the animation style and more 'adult' themes. A lot of american cartoons are simply pathetic. Just watch the Kids WB for an afternoon or Cartoon Network almost any time of day outside of Adult Swim. Catch some 'Ed, Edd, and Eddie', 'Moocha Loocha' (sp?), or if anyone remembers the abomination of 'Molly-O' (the misadventures of a 5 year old girl rock star with a kangaroo drummer.) Just to name a few of the ones I hate the most. I love cartoons. I always have. But the golden cartoons like the old Merry Melodies, Bugs 'n Daffy, Tom and Jerry, etc, are all gone. Even the good (IMO) WB stuff is gone. I thought Animaniacs had a few great moments. Freakazoid and Pinky & the Brain were even brilliant at times with subtle humor and gags. (Many of which were aimed at adults, but the kids were cracking up at the more obvious humor.) While most anime isn't funny, (or at least not much of what I've seen), it's still a neat little area to explore. (I like Inuyashaa and Cowboy Beebop myself.)

Just keep in mind, most of any anime you've seen in the US isn't really 'good' anime, with a few exceptions. It's either kiddy crap, or designed just to market toys, (any Kids WB anime).

(Sorry for the long post, I didn't mean for it to go on and on.)
