Can someone explain the different panel types?

I've noticed people commenting on different panels that are in monitors. S-PVA, S-IPS, etc. Can someone tell me the different types and give a quick run down of what's the "best" (if there is such a thing) quality/performance-wise? Also, where will the type of panel that is used in a monitor be labeled? Is there a tag somewhere on most monitors that will say which it is?
