can someone explain the difference between a plugin and a codec to me?

I am trying to play a .mov on irFanview and I do have the .mov plugin installed.

But it seems that I am missing a codec for this video file to play. How do I find the right one and what is a codec?

thanks.

Codec is usually the algorithm you used for encoding. Try searching on google for "video codec".
*.mov file is usually a quicktime movie file. Did you try playing it with Quicktime player?

Think of the plug-in as an additional add-on for something in order to do something else. The codec comes in as kinda like a standard and a requirement in order to view/listen to something properly, if at all.

I am at work and they won't let me install Quicktime but I do have IrFanview and that is supposed to be able to play *.mov files. I have installed the *.mov plug-in but I have read that it also needs some codec to work properly.
