can someone explain SETI to me?

I'm doin seti for TA, just started recently after assimilating a few cows for rc5, can someone explain the GUI to me?

okay, for seti what is happening is you are downloading radio telescope data and your computer is analyzing it to see if there are any sound spikes in the noise it records, that way you are searching for an alien "signal" and if you find one then you might have just found E.T. as far as GUI I have no clue exactly what your are doing, I think that is testing 64 bit encryptions but i'm not sure, someone else might be able to help out with that one.

in short you are looking for ET and SETI is a waste (sorry!) but it is. We aren't gonna find the aliens, not in our lifetime. The only intriguing thing about SETI is if you find it you get a Nobel Prize but that wont happen. Do RC5, crack the code, give Anand some money so he can keep this site so great.

If you're running the GUI, make sure you set it to go to blank screen in about 5 minutes, or it will nearly double your work unit times! :-Q

NakaNaka, what the heck is your problem with SETI? I have a right to run SETI if I feel like it. And IMHO the amount of money Anand would get if TA won RC5 would be a drop in the bucket compared to his ad revenue.

I already know about doin the blank screen, I wish there was a 3rd party version of the client w/o the graphics 🙂

NakaNaka there's no room for comments like yours here. If you keep it up then it won't be long until you alienate yourself from most of the team. You'll be hard pressed to find anyone willing to help you out here if you continue to put down the projects they work on and tell everyone who asks about them that it's "a waste".

Team AnandTech is one big team that is running many different projects. None of us try to recruit members from the other projects it's just plain rude. It's hard enough to recruit new members for any of our projects with out you coming along and telling people it's useless. I just hope some newbie doesn't drop in checking out seti and reads your post and then decides it's "a waste" and doesn't join any of our teams.

NakaNaka:

You obviously don't get it. If we don't find anything, that's alright. But if we DO find something, it will be one of the greatest discoverys in human history.

Oh yeah, just so ya know, Anand's net worth is MULTI-MILLIONS. The prize money would be almost nothing to him.

NakaNaka:

You are always of course entitled to your own opinion. You may well be right that alien civilizations are too far distant for us to detect any signals. Then again, we definitely won't find such a signal if we don't even look. However, you are absolutely incorrect regarding the validity of the project for the sake of science.

Already, the data gathered and analyzed by SETI members has helped to confirm a number of known and suspected astromical objects such as pulsars, quasars, and other radio-emitting phenomena.

Additionally, the project fosters both imagination and education regarding space and, perhaps more importantly, science itself. While there is argueably just as much validity to the study of cryptography, there is no room in either project for blind ignorance.

>>>We aren't gonna find the aliens, not in our lifetime. <<<<

How do you know? ,anyway if we don't start the search somewhere (& generate interest) then we will never find anything.

We explore to learn.

Go recruite form somewhere else instead of trying to steal SETI members, thats plain rude! :|
