Can someone explain why memory is described as either 16 x 64 or 16 x 72 or what not? What the hell does that mean?

64 bit wide memory is Non-ECC. It is organized as 8 bytes wide which is 64 bits. 72 bit wide memory is ECC memory. ECC uses 64 bits for data and 8 bits for the ECC syndrome.
