Can someone explain it to me why Americans are so fixated on studying arts?

because a lot of people aren't good at engineering, and to be honest many jobs don't really require a degree even if that is the bar they set anyways.

I got a degree in Philosophy, in part, because it was the most applicable to my future job. And I'm glad I did.

I'm about to go back to school and get a Masters in it.

It's funny--philosophy is one of the most useful, widely applicable degrees out there, yet it gets a ton of criticism from people that can barely add--so they get a business degree.

lots of Fortune 500 CEOs were philosophy majors, never wasting time with a petty MBA.

public high schools suck at prepping kids for math and sciences?

Pretty much.
Liberal arts and many others are a great way to get a generic degree that wont actually do shit in the modern world. You need a real degree these days or get some work experience. Yes there was a time when anything on paper meant you were hot shit and automatically qualified for a lot mid-level bullshit, but most of those jobs have disappeared thanks to technology advances and the rest requires a lot more than book learning.
