ok, i'm an ATi guy and everywhere i turn i see the criticisms for the 5800 ultra. the three main criticism are as follows: too loud, to expensive, takes up to slots. but as far as i can tell, it's still a high performance card. what is someone doesnt care about the noise, has extra slot to spare, and money isnt an issue?

then go for the 5900 ultra ;)

btw, 5800 is about on par the the 9700 pro. 5800 is a good card performance wise.

One reason people dis the 5800 Ultra is because it was anounced so long ago and yet barely any cards got to the market. The 9700 Pro has been out since last summer and blew away the competition at the time and the 5800 never materialized to offer it any competition at the time. Now that there are a few 5800 Ultras out now it is too little too late. I have an ATI AIW 9700 pro and a Leadtek 5800 Ultra and the 5800 is faster until you really crank up AA. But the 5800 Ultra is one stable screaming card. When I was using the AIW 9700 pro my computer would lock up in games and watching DVD's. I unistalled all the ATI drivers and used Driver Cleaner threw in the 5800 Ultra and my computer has not stuuttered or locked up once since.

yeah I agree.

It was hyped up, released late, had crappy launch drivers, and those 3 issues you mentioned.

I love mine though.

Image quality is also slightly worse than ATI's cards. That and the noise are the big ones.

Isn't part of the problem you don't see many the lack of 500MHz DDR2 as well?

In any case, with the new DetFX drivers that fix the AF, the 5800Ultra is as good of a card as any you can buy right now, just louder.

And more expensive so it is definately worth the money, I'd rather spend my $100-200 I'd save with a 9700 Pro on other things. Other than that the 5800 does perform fairly well in many aspects, just isn't worth it for all of the negatives. Might as well save your money for a 5900 if you're going to spend that much money at all.

I saw pics of the 5800 Ultra without the flow fx but more of a 5900 design....is this going to be implimented later on to its retail design?

I think thats on the MSI cards.
Despite what people say, the 5800 is a good card. Its just as fast as a 9700pro. But the downer is the noise. Its over 60dBa loud. Even nVidia has admitted the FlowFX was a mistake.
