I am not advocating child porn in any way, but I am wondering about how we view the kids that are almost adults.

I see on the news from time to time, a 15 or something yr old running out with a gun and killing a few people. They catch him and have a hearing to figure out if (s)he has the mentality to stand trial as an adult. A panel of pchycologists or other qualified people evaluate the kid and based on their assesment, the DA charges as an adult or as a juvenile.

But when it comes to sex, they never bother with trying to see if the kid understands the ramifications and just give them the benefit of the doubt (or in this case, the detriment of the doubt) and are always considered a child.

Why is it sometimes we treat kids as adults in some crimes, but do not apply the same procedures if the crime involves sex? Or do it is done and we just don't hear about it?

This thread has potential.

Well, any 15-year-old who thinks running amok on a murderous shotgun-rampage is retarded or has some very, very serious issues. They probably think the bigger issue is figuring out if he is of sane mind - let alone child/adult.

The sex thing, I don't get. The kids that are now registered as sex offenders because they took pictures of one another stumps me...it beats my senses.

The strangest thing I have ever seen was a friend of mine who was 19 at the time (so was his girlfriend) got arrested for having a picture of himself nude (with the girl) when they were underage. It got dropped pretty quickly, but it was still the stupidest thing I have ever heard of.

Basically the justice system should be renamed the punishment system.

It sounds like these are pretty common stories. I have a good friend who married her sex offenfer. He was 19 when she was 17, 5 months shy of 18 and were caught by her folks doing the nasty. Folks pressed charges, he plead no contest, sentenced to 1 year, but got out in time for their wedding.
