PIC

All of the sudden the picture contracted to just that narrow column. I've tried the monitor with another system and the same thing happens. If I try to bring up the monitor's OSD, it only displays in that narrow column so it's definitely something's wrong with the monitor.

samething happens on the ones at school, bat connection. check the back of the monitor where the VGA cord goes into the monitor. play around with it till it starts to work again.

Not a connection problem. The horizontal beam deflection has gone fishing. This means that either the flyback transformer is dead, or the circuitry steering it.

This is lethally high voltage equipment, so don't even think of trying to fix it yourself unless you're a trained monitor repair technician.

I played with the cable like Schadenfroh suggested and unfortunately it didn't work.

I think you're right Peter. I am able to stretch and move the image vertically, but I can't do a thing about it horizontally.

It's well out of warranty and weighs a ton (well 80+lbs). Luckily, monitors don't cost as much to replace these days as they did a few years ago.

Oh well. Thanks for the help guys.

The exact same thing happened to my monitor, except right before it happened I smelled smoke coming from it and it got really hot (it was powered off when it happened). I was fast page flipping between video modes which is what I think caused the issue (running game in 1024X768 and desktop 800X600). I've been sans monitor for a year now, waiting on a decent HDTV LCD deal. It's not that bad, really... I sometime think I want to just get a decent smaller LCD, but in the end I still come back to wanting to wait on a 30" Aquos or similar.
