Can someone break down TDP for me Barney Style?

So I've been "out of the game" for awhile now, and I'm lagging in tech prowess when it comes to TDP, What is it and whats the importance in it?

TDP = Thermal Design Power. Given the stock settings for a piece of hardware, it's the thermal envelope, the maximum possible heat dump that you need to deal with on a cooling aspect.

Sorry bout that. So basically If a Processor's TDP is rated at 125 thats the most amount of heat it will give off? and I've read about if it exceeds the TDP the processors will throttle back?

Most modern processors have internal thermistors and will monitor die temperature to prevent self immolation.
