Something under $150. In case it matters, 99% of my driving is done in NY and CT states.

Porsche 993 twin turbo AWD @ 150 mph. You will detect every radar you pass.

I've heard that if you obey the law that you don't get pulled over. Might wanna try that...

What good is a detector? Once you detect, the cop prolly already has your ass tagged going 20MPH over

Radar detectors (good ones like the V1) are tools to avoid speeding tickets. In the hands of a trained user they can help reduce your odds of getting a ticket quite a bit but nothing is guaranteed.

I've always wanted one, but I figured I could get 2 or 3 tickets before it would pay for itself... And if I'm driving THAT fast, I probably ought to slow down a little.

i had an escort 4500 that i swore by, only ticket i ever got was one w/ a cop that had a great hiding spot on a desolate highway...oh well. too bad that baby got stolen. now i have a whistler, which is ok, nowhere near as good as the escort, but it was a present, so the price was right. the valentine 1 is my next detector for certain though

Detector? Bah, what you need is a jammer. Nothing like electronic warfare on the highway. Of course, it's HIGHLY illegal, but can you imagine how much fun it would be to race by a cop and burn out his radar? One guy here apparently did that (Air Force electronics guy). Unfortunately, the cop was rather smart and figured out what happened, pulled the guy over, and nailed him. :D

I can get you a free one really cheap --> here's what you do

1) While driving, wait for idiot A who is driving really fast to pass you.

2) Let idiot A get about a quarter/half mile ahead of you.

3) Pick up speed to maintain your distance from idiot A

4) If you see flashing lights a half mile in front of you... idiot A was busted, and you slow down... of, if idiot A slams breaks, so do you.... --> idiot A is your free radar detector.

NOTE: been using this method for 10 years now... works pretty well. The alternative is to just drive 2-3 mph slower than the fastest car on the highway. Somedays you lose with this on becasue everyone is going the speed limit. In that case, you drive 4-5 mph above speed limit.

Totally not true! I kept hearing that when I asked for Radar Dector recommendations, but figured I'd get it anyways. Its a HUGE advantage when used properly. On the way to Indiana(7hr drive) for thanksgiving, I averaged probably 110mph! :) The only one I almost got caught on was a po hiddin right behind a huge bush, a second before seeing him I get a 9/10 on Ka band, I hit the brakes hard and go by the cop at 74mph.

Not all cops use instant on or laser speed guns. And when they leave their radars on, the waves bounce and thats what your detector picks up so you know theres a po po around!

i got my brother one last year because he drives about 60 miles a day to and from work.

he got a ticket within 6 months.

he said he got used to depending on it so that actually made him speed more.

the cop that got him was on a country back road, not some highway.

the cop was using instant on or something. there aint a damn thing you can do about that.

he sold the fool thing.

One question though: should I get the the one that feeds off the lighter or the one working with batteries? The reason I'm asking is because I already use the the outlet for cellphone charger and would like a detector that works on the batteries. However, the question is how long would batteries last?

actually it should be pretty obvious, maybe not on back roads but on streets it should

everytime he turns the radar on you get a strong hit

you get a few of those you should suspect instant on somewhere close

You probably already know this but, radar detectors are illegal in CT. Not telling you not to get one or use one. Just providing information.

Actually, I had no idea. I'm originally from NY, and moved to CT only a year ago.
