Can somebody explain to me the British Commonwealth?

I'm very curious about how the British commonwealth countries are affected by being part of it. I know that technically it makes the Queen/King of England the head of state for the countries and that it provides economic benefits but I'd like to know how it actually affects the countries. Could the British Governer General decide to make some new laws if he/she pleased? Could the Queen decide to mess around with you country if she was in the mood?

As far as Queen messing with a commonwealth coutry is concerned, she cannot even mess with England, let alone other countries...
the whole thing is a farce in the current political situation, meaningless and only namesake. Most ofthe countries do not even recognize the queen as the head of state (esp the countreis in asia and africa).
