Can somebody explain this switch wiring to me? (House)

It's two seperate circuits, What two are hot coming into the switch box?

get a multimeter or you could just lick each one and find out which ones are live

Probably a Four-way switch but I would break out the multimeter to test it.

In the US, we usually have black/white, with the black hot. But, I never trust someone else's wiring. You can even get a little pocket tester for about $1 that'll determine for certain which is hot and which is neutral.


edit: my point being: never trust the colors unless you've connected them at both ends personally!

I'm not dead.

I worked it out by taking apart the switches and outlets.

Damn. Stupid mutliple colors.

Will pick up a multimeter next time at the store. I have a voltage detector, but it's no good for figuring out which is which, looks like it's time for an upgrade, I've needed a multimeter a couple of times now.



The fan is working, huzzah.
