I think AMD first started making chips at the 386 or 486 level, then they jumped to the K6 to combat the Pentium and the K6-2 to get Pentium II and the K6-3 to get the Pentium III. Sort of anyway. The Athlon came along right around the K6-3 area so you don't see too many of the K6-3s around. The first Athlon was slot A then they went to the T-bird (still technically Athlon-b but now Socket A) then the increased the FSB to make Athlon-c and now they are doing a big revamp to make Athlon 4 (Palomino) to combat the Pentium 4 at higher clock rates. Between the Athlon-b and Athlon-c AMD introduced a new budget chip to replace the K6-2,3 called the Duron. The Duron was intended to compete with the Celeron for market share. There's the basics in a nut shell and I hope I got most of it right so I don't get too many people calling me stupid. Not that it isn't true, I just don't like other people pointing it out all the time. ;)

AMD CPUs:
286- 386 - 486 - 5x86 - k5 - k6 - k6-2 - k6-III - k6-III+ - Athlon SlotA - Duron - Athlon Thunderbird - Athlon 4 Palomino - etc.
.bh.
The first AMD chips were made under license from Intel to help supply market demand. Tbe 5x86 (486dx4-133) was the first significant departure and the fastest 486-level chip ever made.

Much better than mine zepper, but I thought the first t-bird was out before the first duron, no?

so the A4 is socket a?

and it uses less power than earlier models?

is the clock rate for the mp model lower than the highest single model? and if so why?

will amd chips be available on chipsets other than via?

To Nelson et al.
I'm not exactly sure which came first the Duron or tbird. Probably the t-bird came first, but also probably so close together to not make any real diff. Also I think the k6-III+ actually came out after the Slot-A. The AMD web site probably has a good time line.
.bh.
Oh, and BTW, it was the 5x86 that probably caused the falling out between Intel and AMD. Shortly after that they began spending a lot of time in court with each other.bh.
pps. I went and looked and believe it or don't, AMD started making Intel licensed CPUs in the mid '70s beginning with the 8080A. I didn't check the complete timeline. the page I looked at was www.amd.com->about->history.
. I didn't get involved with PCs until about 1980, so I wasn't too aware of what went on much before that.
