please, only thoughtful posts. this seems to be a directly relevant issue in light of today's events. my friend stops short of justifying the attacks by saying that america has been provoking certain parties (such as palestine) for too long and that such an attrocity was bound to happen eventually. can anyone chime in on this, informatively?

I wouldnt say this is totally informative, and I could be wrong, but I will do my best to keep as much of the bias out as I can.

Israel and Palestine have had problems for centuries (probably longer). Each country butchers citizens of the other, and then that country retaliates. I believe it is mostly religious differences that have caused these problems.

Basically, Israel took land from Palestine. US supports Israel. All middle east countries (most) support Palestine.
Both have a long and difficult histories and all this leads to what happend today.

If anyone has more information, please post.

Israel holds our nukes for that region, that's one reason we support them, another is because of the influencial Jewish figures in the US.

One thing is for sure, Israel is now going to have no problem justifying offensivness in the region as "fighting terrorism."

Dirty deeds. Start paying attention to the world around you and pray to God you are blessed with good judgement to decern what deed is dirtier and by whom.

There are probably better reasons that I have no clue about, but Israel is a better position strategically. And they let us have military installations on their soil I believe.

so it's more a case of which side better suits our interests, rather than one of absolute right and wrong. i figured as much. :(

The post about israel taking land from palestine is wrong. The israelis were forced out of israel during the disaspora. in 1948, the jews wanted a small portion of land so they could have a country that they could belong to. The 5 surrounding Arab nations decided to demolish the jews and attack all at once. The jews won the war and more land, but still gave it back. In 1967 the Arabs attacked Israel during its high holy days, and israel won, took more land, and still gave a strategic position back to the palestenians. This can not be blamed on the israeli's. they have never been on the offensive except to ensure their safety. The only times the israeli's attacked was when provoked by the Arabs. When Israel retaliates, the whole world yells at it. But when the Palestenians send suicide bombers to kill Israeli teenagers, it is not that big of a deal.

there has been wrong done on both sides, but you can't say that Israel's latest actions can be justified, look how the UN reacted

I will not get into a debate with you, especially since you seem to know a lot more about it than I do. But I think this goes back farther. Much farther. And of course, there are people out there that congratulate Israel when they retaliate in a reasonable manner.

I think the previous analysis is too simplistic. Neither side in the middle-east is without blame. Why not read one of the many articles freely available on the web:

The bootom line here is if we supported the palestine people would Israel of done or supported such an act of hate,I dont think so.So the question of who is right and who is wrong has been answered by the support of a countries such as palestine, not to mention several others that are celabrating the death of our innocent. After this when we retaliate and we will there should be not so much outrage out of the American people over the death of innocent people due to our actions.War is WAR and this was an act of War against our country and we will lose a peice of our freedom because of it.
