Can slow video cards slow down a fast operating system

Hello, I just bought pentium 4 1.8A system with a intel mobo.
everyhing is working rock solid, except the performance is a little slow
because I am running a NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 M64.
can a video card have a substantial effect on your operating system?
i just ordered a new video card because I am thinking the video card
is suspect.

it will only affect areas where you have to use your graphics card, as in games and refreshing your desktop which you dont have to worry much about.. the desktop part that is

Usually the difference is not noticable, but if you have a card that is still redrawing the screen and the system is waiting for that ...I guess that could be the case. OS are now able to effectively support multitasking to an extent, so only in operations that rely on the card (games etc)

Additionally, the bulk of Windows XP might be the culprit

Yes, slow video card will slow down the system substantially because the graphics won't be hardware accelerated (and no, I don't mean 3D acceleration). I know because I had a GeForce1 in my old system (P3 733 with Win XP) that I swapped for TNT1 card and its dog slow now. Selecting multiple files is the most sluggish, but its also slow when it needs to draw a new window or close a window.

What OS are you running? If you are running XP, then you will need to tweak the settings to get good performance out of it.

i dont think vid card will affect the performance of a system at all!!! except when u are runing applications are are vid card dependent like games.

thats why you dont see network servers wit geforce 4, all they need is a decent 8 mb card.

the bottleneck for you slow performance is NOT related to ur vid card.

My voodoo3 2k works fine on win2k and a 500 cel .

I am using windows 2000, and it has to do with the mouse scrolling.
the scroll button, actually. When I use the mouse scrolling to scroll down
in IE, it tends to be sticky. and the only thing I can account for is the
slow video card that I have in my system.
