Can slides/transparancies/diapositivs be digitized?

Is there some kind of consumer hardware peripheral that will let me transfer these images, which are deteriorating in their Kodak Carousels over time (25 - 30 years old). I know that negatives can be scanned, but is there a piece of hardware out there that can be utilized under, say Vista, to digitize this legacy so that I can save them to a DVD before they deteriorate into an unviewable condition? I put them away and just dragged them out, along with my projector, for the first time in about 15 years, and I wasn't happy with what I saw. I know that there are businesses that can do this, like transfer 8mm or super 8 film/cinefilm into VHS format. I'd just like to do it myself, which I hope would be less expensive and with more TLC for the images.

Yes, it can be done. I have done it to many hundreds of slide out of Kodak Carousels. I use that came with my scanner, and Epson Photo scanner. It comes with a matrix plastic which holds four 35mm slides. When using that, the lid pad is removed because slides require illumination on both sides. Then it is matter of scanning and saving. It took many months, but I eventually got all the ones worth saving.

You probably do not want to do all 1500. Here's one I made into a small, emailable .jpg file - picture was taken circa 1953, an old Kodak 35 camera on Kodachrome.

There are also matrices for holding 35mm film strips, color or B&W, positive or negative.

Yes. Just a matter of finding a scanner that supports it. Many have the ability to scan slides and negatives. They can also do overhead projector transparentcies.

Yes, there are scanners that have carriers to handle slides. The Epson software will scan multiples at once and save them in individual files. The V500 can do 4 at time while the V700 can scan up to 12 at a time.
