Can SLI work without the Bridge connector?

Well the question pretty much is up in the title.

I was chatting away and i was told that SLI can work without the bridge connector, it just takes a performance hit, is this true?

Like transfering all data over the bus from card to card? Sure it can work, if you like 2 fps at 640x480. You need extreme bandwidth with super low latency.

Yes, Nvidia SLI will work with with out the bridge, it has to go through the PCI Express interface which drastically reduces performance.

Link?

Everything I've seen so far indicates you have to use the special SLI connector.
