new to sli so i thought i would ask...

i am sorry, clarification...

the dual sided selector cards "chips" that go into the socket of the mb...one side for single card, other side for SLI...can an ABIT fit in an ASUS, if the chipset is the same?

What exactly do you mean by "chips"? Some boards have a "card" that you turn around to enable SLI and some don't. There is a "bridge" that ties the 2 video cards together at the top of the cards. Do you mean that?

Let me know and I'll do my best to help.

The only thing I can think of that he's talking about is SLI-branded RAM.

Yes, you can use SLI-branded RAM (aka memory modules,) in other motherboards, as long as it uses the same technology and speed. (So you can't use DDR-1 memory in a DDR-2 motherboard or vice versa, and if your SLI memory is only 3200 speed, and the other motherboard needs 6400 speed, you're also out of luck.)

Ah. I know that early on, each manufacturer did it differently. I don't know about now. (Some manufacturers used little cards, others used giant sets of jumpers.) I would say that it depends from motherboard to motherboard, manufacturer to manufacturer.

The only way to find out is to compare the two specific boards in question.

Edit: Looking at your subject, you say you are wondering between an Asus A8N and an Abit A8N.

Abit's closest board to that name is the just plain AN8, which doesn't even have SLI. So I assume you don't mean that. Then the next obvious choice would be the AN8-SLI.

Likewise, Asus doesn't have a just plain A8N, they do have an A8N-SLI Deluxe, though.

Looking at the manuals for the two, their SLI jumpers do look like they have the same pinout. They appear to be based on the standard Nvidia-designed jumper.

There may be some motherboards that use the same plug in card on the board, but you have no guarantees of this. Some use a standard one and some have proprietary ones. This is not my advice, but if it fits corectly, it will probably work. If you are not sure, don't try it!
