Can rounding cables decrease CD-ROM performance?

I recently rounded the IDE cable going to my CD-ROM. Everything worked fine for a while, till I noticed that some things, like movies, would skip frames or hang for a few seconds. Could it be because of the cabled being rounded? It worked fine for 2 or 3 days. I ran Sandra 2000 on it and it showed that the CD-ROM benchmarked worse than an 8X. I haven't switched cables yet. I almost hope that it's the CD-ROM, so I can get a DVD player to replace it.
