A house not to far from me has decided nearly remove the entire crown from their trees, the trees now has no more than 3 or 4 "branches" from the trunk, each only an few inches long. Can't this kill the tree? I was just wondering.

Depends on the tree. With healthy roots, new branches may grow. For example you can cut a maple to the ground and it will gladly start over and grow into a full tree again.
