I'm running English Win 2k and have added Korean language support from the setup disk and Korean input support for the keyboard (through Regional Options). I can read Korean in documents and in Firefox, but cannot type anything in from the Keyboard. Even when I switch to Korean input, only English comes out.

I have no idea what is wrong. Can anyone help?

I don't use Korean, but I'll assume it's largely the same with Japanese input..

Are you using the keyboard shortcuts to switch to Korean input? Have you tried loading the language bar and manually selecting Korean input? Make sure it's not selecting an alphabet/alphanumeric input as I think that makes it type in English rather than in the intended language. Have you also gone into the properties of the Korean input system to make sure it defaults to Korean?

Edit:
FWIW I usually hit LeftAlt + LeftShift to switch between languages, in this case English->Japanese. After that, I need to hit LeftAlt+` to switch the Japanese input from Alphabet to Hiragana.

Edit2:
Forgot to mention this is on XP.. I don't think the process is all that different from Win2k though.

I would assume they are the same as well. I've tried to use the icon and the keyboard shortcut LeftAlt + LeftShift to switch between languages, both with no success.

I don't know about the language bar, and that might be something exclusive to XP, not in both 2K and XP. From what I've read online, the setup - and some options it seems - are different between the two versions.

Have you tried the directions on the Microsoft KB?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/177561

Relevant section:
To enable a newly added language and specify a keyboard layout in Windows 2000, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Regional Settings.
3. Click the Input Locales tab.
4. In the Input Locales box, click the appropriate language, and then click Properties.
5. In the Keyboard Layout box, click the appropriate keyboard layout, click OK, and then click OK.

Edit:
From this link:
http://www.declan-software.com...nese_ime/#2000_install

It looks like you do have a Language bar - it's just called a Toolbar instead.

Hope that helps. (The link talks about installing Japanese, but Korean is listed there too. It should be the same.)

I have the Input Locales set up - one for English and one for Korean. I have the icon to switch between languages, but don't have any icon for the Toolbar.

Well, just to make sure, you have the IME installed, right?

If so, that second link seems pretty precise with the instructions. Could you describe where it is going wrong?
Is it that you've added the proper Korean Keyboard, but it just won't activate? (You can try a reboot too, sometimes changing language settings requires this - but I don't remember having to with the keyboard.)

IME is installed. I have followed all the instructions from the link (which are pretty standard) and everything seems to setup fine (there are no error messages). But when I switch to Korean, I still get English. That's where it fails. It's like I only have one language and keyboard layout installed.

That is an odd problem..

Have you gone to the properties of the Korean keyboard to check it settings?
I just tried to add Korean here, but the only choice I have is the Korean Input System (IME 2002) which doesn't have a whole lot of options. I don't know any Korean either so I can't test to see if it works. When you switch to Korean, can you right-click the KO icon for additional options? Perhaps one of them will allow you to switch between Alphabet and Korean.

I get no additional options with the icon other than Properties, which brings me to Regional Options. Keyboard properties only offers Korean(Hangul), not IME 2002. I noticed in your link they tell you to NOT simply choose Japanese, but one of the IME settings. That makes me think something is missing. However, I'm *assuming* IME is installed because I did a standard setup and there was no request for the setup disk when I added Korean. To test everything I'm going to swap out my hard drives and run a clean install on a backup to see if something is actually missing. It just shouldn't be this difficult get working.

Thanks for your help.

I'm glad to help, IME is a tricky beast to get working - I've needed my fair share of help with it.

Whenever I've installed Windows XP, I always go through all the language and keyboard settings during setup to select all the languages I'll ever think of needing, so I assume that forces Windows to install all necessary files at that time. I've not tried ignoring it before, but maybe that could be what happened - Windows 2000 chose not to install the Korean IME Keyboard file because it wasn't selected. In this case, you should be able to add it manually afterwards if you have the Windows CD. It doesn't make sense not to let you do that.. but then again it's Microsoft we're talking about here.

Reinstalled and got all the necessary options. Now everything works fine. Something must have gotten corrupted in the orginal install.

EDIT: I'm still wondering why Windows wasn't asking for the missing files.

Glad it's working now.
I have no idea why that would be, but here's my guess: it's Windows. ;)
