Can print a test page, but can't print from any application; fresh system

I just formatted the hard drive and installed the OS. Downloaded the printer driver from Canon's website and installed it. I'm able to print a test page and align the printer heads, but when I try to print from any application, it comes back with this message:

"An error occurred during this operation"

I hit OK and then it closes. No print dialogue box.

Everything is fine in device manager.

Ideas?

Must be a driver thing. You sure you got the right one for your OS? Or try a legacy driver.

Tried both the driver from the CD and the latest driver. It will print the test page, just not from an application.

Also, this is a fresh install of the OS, and it just restarted on its own, which is what it was doing before. Maybe a mobo issue?

I checked to see if were overheating, and it's not.

System Temp: 37 degrees Cel
CPU Temp: 60 degrees Cel (shutdown temp is 80 deg cel)

If your system can see the printer, it's unlikely you have a hardware problem (except maybe the printer itself.) If the HD or RAM were faulty, your computer would not work correctly, if at all, so following this train of thought to fix a printer won't be very fruitful.

You didn't specify what model printer you are using, but some USB printers require you to install the software and THEN plug in the USB cable. Many people screw this up resulting in a nonfunctional printer, but your printer may vary.

Thanks.

The reason I mention the other items is that this system also just restarted on its own, and it's a fresh install. So, I'm dealing with other issues as well.

It's a Canon S300. You're right. Some printers are picky about when you plug it in. I waited until it asked for it before I plugged it in.

I'd sort that out first. What use is printing from a system you can't even work on?

Anyway, it's USB, right? It might be the USB drivers rather than the printer drivers. Are you on the MS ones or did you install from the CD that came with the board?

Is the printer selected as the defualt printer? The system may be trying to output print orders to some other device or unknown location. Sometimes you have to go into the control panel and manuelly select the printer as the defualt printer.

Yea I would check to make sure its the only printer listed in your control panel. I know default is a microsoft document printer or something, so make sure that your printer is selected as default.

Another thing regarding your random restarts, what program are you using to test your RAM? And how old are the components? It might be your RAM or PSU, or even your Mobo if its like 4 years old.

I own a CanonS200SPx printer.

Tell us, can you print the test page from your applicaiton ?

i.e. What I mean is, from MS word (or whatever program you use) take the print settings, and from THERE can you print out your test page?

Or something less wasteful, can you see your printer ink-levels FROM the application?

When something goes wrong with my printer, I just un-plug and re-plug the printer USB while the application is running. Then, dynamically I see the ink levels get updated on screen.

I cannot explain why it works that way, but sometimes, the applicaiton just doesn't 'connect' to the printer, EVEN IF I get things setup from the Control Panel. So, I just unplug & replug the USB. ( At times, powering on and off the printer also helps )
