Can poke fun and laugh at yourself?

My supervisor and I have similar senses of humors, and we could both be described as cynical, with a touch of smart-alect-ness.

It irritates me when I make a comment and everyone laughs, then the next day I get counseled on that same comment because it was inappropriate, then the day after that, he makes an almost identical comment. He's poked fun at people above him and below him, often more than I have.

There are two differences between us. 1)He seems to not be able to laugh at himself. If a joke is directed at me, I laugh and it rolls off my back. If a joke is even slightly directed at him, he sulks for a day or so, then chews the individual who made it out in his office, and then will direct a similar joke at another individual shortly after. 2)Hes one pay grade above me. For reference, we're both in supervisory roles.

Now, I am not a difficult person to get along with, but people like this really infuriate me. And really takes a lot to anger me at work. I don't think its a stretch to describe this person as a hypocrite.

See, I'm not sulking at that comment right now. He would be in his office stewing. And yet, if the comment was directed at another individual at a meeting, he wouldn't give it a second thought.

Sounds like he has self-confidence issues. I kinda understand though, if you're in charge of other people that you deal with day-to-day it can feel like you're always walking a tightrope between being a cool guy to work with and being a pushover. You can't be a pushover in any circumstance, especially if other people above you in the chain of command could hold you accountable for the performance of those below you. This guy sounds like he can't really stay on the tightrope. He just skips back and forth to the extremes on either side of it.

I honestly don't know how I would handle a job where I'm in charge of other people and must stay friendly with them while still getting the most out of them at the same time. Some people pull this off brilliantly, but I never figured out how.

Like I posted in the other "sense of humor" thread...

Part of my job is to make a fool of myself every day - sometimes in front of 1000 people.
