can playing with shifter while the car is off damage the transmission?

pretty sure if you clutch in and shift around with the car off, it's not big deal. after all, you're doing that shile the car is on.

but what if you don't clutch in? there's nothing moving around. can you grind the gears?

no, does the same thing. Only difference when the car is running is that the engine is turning thus moving the gears, when you clutch in all your doing is removing that turning. So when just sitting there off its like having the clutch in

yeah there can be wear on the shift linkage bushings. but if its your first car and youre just creaming over it in your driveway, theres nothing to worry about. shift away, have fun, it gets boring quick

You'll cause a minor amount of wear. The same amount that would be caused by actual shifting on the road. You CAN jack up the shift forks and such, but you need to be acting like a pissed off ape trying to re-enact 5spdgirl to do anything even moderately significant.

Mine doesn't go into gear without the clutch depressed with or without the engine on. So you can practice shift with the clutch while it's off. But not without depressing the clutch. Force it and you'd break something for sure.

Sorry, but no. The amount of wear is insignificant. It's simply not worth worrying about at all. Worrying about wearing the transmission by shifting with the car off is every bit as stupid as worrying that holding the clutch pedal down while at a stoplight will wear out the throwout bearing. It's simply not enough wear to matter at all in the real world.
