Can phoneline network and ethernet coexist?

I have a win2k server running using RRAS right now and it works great, much more control than ICS. My roommate is going to go kill some rebels in Kosovo so I am moving back to my parents house until I find a different place. I am going to share a cable connection with my dad's computer which will be relocated upstairs. If I have to, I will run cat5 outside and up two floors, but I am looking into phone line networking. I need to find out if there is any way that I can keep my laptop and work comp networked to my server over ethernet as well as setup a phone line network for my dad to connect to my server and share cable with. (I am pretty tired, hope this came out clear enough). Is this possible? I have seen something about a 10bt to phone line converter, but i didn't know if i could just plug this into my hub and have it work. Please help me out, i don't want to have to drill holes and climb a ladder just to share a cable modem. (They don't cover this is win2k server class).

I would not recommend using the Phone network implementation. Yes it is easy to setup, but you can run into problems. I have seen power fluctuations that have fried computers, but you might not experience this problem. You will get slow performance however. I would consider a wireless solution for your network. It will provide better throughput and better reliability. If you can afford it, look into the Lucent Orinoco Wireless solution. We are running it in our production environment, and it works flawlessly.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Phone line networking will work with regular ethernet, but as shadow said, it isn't recommended. I'm faced with the same problem...installing a seemingly impossible-to-cable computer in the house, but I really don't want to spend a lot of money. The attic looks promising, but I really don't feel like swimming in all the insulation up there. Running it outside will subject it to too much abuse and interference.
