Can phone signals run through a switch?

A friend of mine has his house wired with cat5. 6 total lines all coming into one closet.
The lines were all tied together with wire nuts, but he has now put individual rj45 ends on each wire.

He is getting cable today and of course wants to run the connection along each cable.
No big deal, he has a router with a 8 port switch built in.

But he would also like phone connection to run along each line.

What's the best solution for this.

Sounds like a very bad idea.. don't forget that when a phone rings the voltage in the line jumps..
I would think you'd have a pretty good chance of frying the switch.

not 100% sure on this but it doesn't sound safe.

Plugging a phone line in the switch will not work. You can take the middle pair from each cat5 wire and run them to one phone line. Then at the wall jack you either remove those two wires and wire them to their own rj11 jack, or you can have it so you can plug either a phone or a computer into the one wall plate--that is what I do.
