Can people change?

Can people really, really change themselves naturally and with sheer will alone? Or is there always that sub-layer that remains, hidden by a thick coating of lies and deception?

EDIT: "Lies and deception" may be overly dramatic. You get the idea, though.

Yes they can. Some people are too weak to change themselves, but I would say that most people can change whatever it is that they are determined to do. The will to change must be real, though, and not an act for someone else. If it's just an act to convince somebody they have changed, it will reveal itself sooner or later.

Yep, I'm testament to that. Great friends, and small changes like just eating better/smarter and being a little more active, I'm a totally different person than I was just 4 years ago. Still have some of my bad traits (and probably picked up one or two along the way as well), but I'm much happier, and a much better person overall.

People change gradually over time. A long string of smaller events can have just as much impact (if not more) than a single earth-shattering event... although, sometimes that big event really is necessary to wake people up.

To some degree. Althought it might be more of a question of restraint than an actual change if it's a behavioral or mental issue.

All people change. Gradual changes as we mature and experience life. I'm not the same person I was as a teenager, or the same person I was in college.
