hi guys,

I have a PCG-FRV27 model vaio laptop and I would like to upgrade the ram.
the system normally uses pc2100 type 200 dimm ram but my question is; can I use both them together. clearly, one 256 mb pc2100 and the other 512 mb pc2700 , dost it work? and the second question is which one is better, pc2100 or pc2700?

I run my desktop with a stick of 512MB of 2100 and 2 sticks of 256MB 3200 (All Crucial brand) and it works just fine. Don't know if laptops would be more sensitive, but I doubt it. The 2700 memory is faster, so I guess it is better. I would get whichever is cheaper.

They will work fine together. Pc2100 is for a 133Mhz FSB and pc2700 is for a 166Mhz, so technicaly the pc2700 is faster, but they will both run at pc2100 speed when used together.

It's not about them being better, they are rated to run at a different speed. If your machine is running at the pc-2100 speed then the higher spec'd pc-2700 would run at that speed as well. Pretty much a waste to buy the 2700 though unless you can't find 2100.

stevty2889 is right. If you have the bios set to autodetect than the 2700 will throttle back to 2100 speeds with no problem. I have a mix of 2700 and 2100 in my rig. Just be aware that you don't want to run dual channel like that if you can help but you should be fine
